A Few Words On The Mix
“Dubstep Deconstructed in An Aqueduct”

I took a second to step away from Hip Hop and skratch to something different.

Now, I’ll take another second here to blow my own whistle, if you don’t mind…

In an on-going attempt to spread good music, I go off on a tangent to take on a whole new genre: Dubstep. To some it will appeal, to others it sounds like a bad deal. Whatever the case may be, this shall reveal the result of my recent venture of influences. For the followers of Hip Hop, Skratch, Turntablism, Drum N Bass, Reggae, House, Trance, Breakbeat, 2Step, Grime, Crunk, Electro, and Bass genres, there are bits and pieces for everyone. Over the years, I’ve been moved by said genres, so it’s only right to blend it into one complete audio amalgam, in the form of Dubstep.

I believe that in this day and age of everchanging genres, sub-genres, and alienated bastard-step-cousin-twice-removed nano genres, Dubstep is definitely making its own name heard, climbing through the vines of electronica with ease. In all parts of the world, the notion of the idea of darker music such as Dubstep is ever-increasing.  Before we know it, the genre itself will be the new “black.” Hawaii, if not being on the cutting edge of new technology, gadgets, economy building, aloha-having-melting-pot of love, etc., we are but a mere nick in the pacific rim of tertiary hand-me-downs from our musical co-horts round the globe. Sometimes we are in the know, and sometimes we don’t know until it’s too late. I don’t want Hawaii to suffer from a post apocalyptic catastrophe of musical proportions, just because we are confined to a water world of “paradise.” Where the sun shines brightly and sheds light and life within us, gratitude breeds glitch and glamour in disguise. Like the bulk of our islands, Dubstep remains underground and underwater, where its young adolescent, humble beginnings are preparing itself for a 2012-like debut. Hot, Dark and Fresh. Better yet, like a bittersweet coffee analogy, maybe. Hmm…

We the people of the record movers and shakers are responsible in funneling in the sounds from the wayward sides of the world. My goal is to shed light on your darkest wonders of my reasoning of such a release. What attracts me so, is the character of sound, dented and tormented into a cataclysmic bundle of joy. Poised in the position to massage the genre, my influence stems from the jazz/composition/improv technique in the form of scratching, where the cuts are meant to be an accompanying sound to please but never overbearing. In Dubstep, there’s much more space between downbeats, hi-hats & snares to fit cuts and scrapes into, than what Hip Hop could normally provide. The intensified bass & synths are just a bonus that bring the icing to the cake. According to the world of “me”, Dubstep is a modern, steroidized version of what initially began as early Dirtstyle electro beats, underlying the skratchee, yours truly, in training. In hopes of a genre appreciation gain, I plan to put a stain in such an abstinent world of a relatively ripe style of sound. But, don’t listen to me, listen to the music.

Aquadust may appear as a typical mix for the semi-altered, sub-atomic Electronic music consumer. This may appear as a nuisance of sounds chaotically compiled for the average white collar westerner. Or, you may consider it an art piece for your ears, body and mind as your particles warble into a frenzy of a lighting-cracking, bass bending, eardrum-smacking conundrum of a good time. You can dance if you want to. From my initial point of contact with Dubstep, in no time it grew on me. And, in time it will grow on you, too. Be aware: it’s the least one could do.

In the most simplest of terms, “Aquadust” comes from my thoughts refering to rippling water, the relation of a wobbling Bass / Earth, the grime of the sound, and the objective of an acqueduct; to carry, to transport, to give water, life, love, influence.

(disclaimer: In a current world of ultimate saturation, I can only be stubborn in the selection of tracks. It’s not about pushing new tunes all the time, but the quality, the timelessness, era-defining, classics-in-the-making, type of distinctiv(ism) of a sound that matters most. I am not a producer. I am not a musician. I am but a consumer of music who strives to educate my followers. This is a version of how I hear Dubstep. I will also treat this as a prototype for bigger things to come. From Hawaii, to say the least. Enjoy.)

Sincerely,

Packo the Dubstep Nouveau
